Alvis TD21: A Royal Classic with a Regal Touch
The Alvis TD21, produced between 1958 and 1963, holds a special place in British automotive history — not just for its refined engineering, but also for its royal connection.
One of its most notable admirers was Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, consort to Queen Elizabeth II. A passionate driver throughout his life, Prince Philip personally commissioned a custom-built Alvis TD21 Drophead Coupé in 1961.
According to Roly Simmons, a former Alvis employee, the project was no secret on the factory floor:
“It was fairly obvious to the lads on the shop floor that something special was being built, as there was suddenly a lot more activity surrounding one particular chassis.”
What Made the Royal TD21 Unique?
This wasn’t just another TD21. The coachwork firm Park Ward, responsible for building the car’s body, made several modifications to suit the Duke’s preferences:

The windscreen was raised by three inches to offer additional headroom

A compass was integrated into the dashboard’s center

A custom bonnet mascot adorned the front, adding to its regal character
This bespoke version of the TD21 combined British craftsmanship with royal elegance — a truly one-of-a-kind vintage creation.
