New Honda Jazz vs. Hyundai Elite i20

Honda Jazz is a much awaited car from the Honda stable. This time around the car is priced competitively and also has a diesel option – two main drawbacks faced by Honda, the first time it had launched the Jazz in India.

The Honda Jazz has been segmented in the premium hatchback category and its main competitor in this category is the Hyundai i20 Elite. We have prepared a tabular comparison of the two cars and both are neck to neck. Hence, it is going to be a very tough fight between the Japanese Honda and the Korean Hyundai.

One of the major USPs for Honda may turn out to be the availability of an Automatic variant, which Hyundai is currently not
offering.

Engine:

Honda Jazz is fitted with a 1.2 litre petrol engine which produces 90 PS of power at 6000 rpm , whereas the Hyundai Elite i20 , which is also fitted with a 1.2 litre petrol engine produces 83 PS of power at 6000 rpm. Honda offers 7 variants of the Petrol engine of which 2 are Automatic Transmission, whereas the Hyundai offers 5 variants of the petrol engine.

The diesel engine is of the Honda is the 1.5 litre engine which is fitted on the Amaze and the City. Elite i20 Diesel is fitted with a 1.4 litre CRDi engine. Noise levels on the diesel Honda are very high and here the Hyundai betters the Honda in terms of subdued noise emitted by its diesel engine.

But the Jazz trumps the Elite i20 in terms of fuel efficiency. Honda claims a fuel efficiency of 27.3 kmpl for the diesel engine and 18.7 kmpl for the petrol engine. Hyundai has a low mileage of the diesel variant at approximately 22.53 kmpl and the petrol engine has 18.6 kmpl as per ARAI.

Exterior and Interior:

Both cars are fabulous to look at. Hyundai has had a super hit on its hands since it started the Fluidic design and the Fluidic Design 2.0 is also immensely successful. The Honda Jazz was a looker the first time around and this time too Honda has done a great job. The Jazz looks like the City from the front and like the Mobilio from behind. So, those who don’t like the Mobilio’s MPVish design will lean towards the Elite i20.

Both the cars perfectly embody the tag ‘premium hatchback’.

But Hyundai has always ruled the roost when it comes to interior styling, fit and finish and equipment provided. And the i20 is no different. Though the Honda has done a great job on the interiors, the plastic feel quite upmarket and the touchscreen center console gives it an up-to-date feel, the Hyundai’s finishing touches are unbeatable. The interiors give a true feeling of sitting in a premium car.

But, and yes there is a but! Honda comes out tops when we talk about space. Rear legroom and back seat space are where Honda shines. Three can fit comfortably, whereas in Hyundai three people in the rear seat will be a tight fit. Also, Honda
offers the maximum boot space in this segment now.

Equipment and Safety:

Being a premium hatchback, Honda has to give a lot of equipment and Honda has done that in the top variant.  The center console is fitted with a 6 inch touch screen, Bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity . The driver seat has height adjustable feature. The car is also equipped with touchscreen climate control  but what it does not have is parking sensors to accompany the reversing camera and keyless entry and button start.

Inspite of that it is difficult to beat Hyundai in this department. The Hyundai Elite i20 is fitted with all the above plus parking sensors , button start and keyless entry.

Safety features on both the cars remain the same with ABS and airbags for the front two passengers.

Verdict:

As we said at the beginning, it is tough to decide between the 2 cars. However, we like to give our readers a clear indication and we say that Hyundai Elite i20 is the winner. Why? The overall fit and finish is much better at the same price and same equipment level.   (Take a look at the variant wise price comparison down below)

So, only if you want to buy an Automatic Transmission, buy the Honda… otherwise we give the thumbs up to Hyundai.
