The electrical system in a car consists of mainly battery, dynamo, starter and high-tension coil. The coil boosts the low voltage current of the battery and produces as much as 30,000 volts to provide high voltage to the spark plug. A contact-breaker and the rotor, inside the distributor, ensure correct sequence of supply of current to each plug while a condenser attached to the contact breaker serves as a capacitor which minimizes the damage to the contact-breaker. Another function of the electrical system is to start the engine with the help of the starter motor. Maintenance: To retain stored energy of the battery, it needs periodical maintenance like check-up of gravity, level of distilled water and cleaning of terminals by applying a thin film of petroleum jelly to keep it free from corrosion and sulphation.
