Tata Motors, with its Truck engines BS VI compliant, ready for BS VI Launch [Jan 20, 2020]

Enthused by Extra strong response to its  first BS VI model : Tata Altroz, Tata Motors ,India’s largest Automobile Company by revenues is embarking on its most ambitious Commercial Vehicle Launch, as Bharat Stage VI emission norms kick in by April 2020.

Tata Motors said all its engines are BS VI compliant and it is just a matter of getting formal certification. Tata Motors, India`s Most Respected CV Auto manufacture, will have 400 new product programmes and 1,000 variants, come April. Most of the upgrades are on the commercial vehicles front, where — based on applications — different aggregates, engines and body styles are created to suit customer needs.

Upgrades include the Iris 0.5 tonne van, 55-tonne trucks, large buses, Tiago and Harrier SUV, with 40 different powertrain combinations (engine and transmissions) in 1-5.9 litre CNG, LPG, petrol and diesel engines with manual, automatic and automated manual transmission. Tata Motors would have put in Rs 2,500 crore in  BS VI technology, which is its largest investment in vehicle development, said people in the know.

There is a perfect storm on the technology side.It will remove vehicle combinations that didn’t make sense & cut down product variants 15-20% as a step towards rationalisation. In engines, it would  cut down 25-30% as base engine level. The company has already received type approvals for more than 80% of their engines.

Along with the Mega Launch , the company is embarking on its large rationalisation of product portfolio , shedding 120-140 models from its portfolio. The clean-up will ensure higher commonalisation, quicker time to market and lower costs, thanks to new generation modular platforms. However, it would also mean a higher ticket prices.

The Auto Manufacturers in India are now eagerly awaiting, the Government announcement of scrappage policy and large number of incentives in the forthcoming Union Budget which can bring in huge impetus for the Industry as a whole and  for Commercial vehicle sector in particular.

The  CV market expects the company to announce its Mega BS VI launch once the scrappage policy & incentives are formally announced during  the budget speech.

India’s vehicle scrappage policy, which is awaiting its final clearance from the Union cabinet, would focus on eliminating the fleet of old polluting commercial vehicles plying on the country’s roads, said a senior government official.“The policy has been finalized and we are waiting for the cabinet’s approval, which is expected soon," said the official.

The proposed policy is seen as an attempt by the government to boost automobile demand, which has been hit by weak consumer demand amid a slowdown in the broader economy.

The success of the policy would, however, hinge on the incentives it would carry for buyers and manufacturers, a senior executive at a commercial vehicle maker said . The executive outlined the incentives as road tax exemption, reduction in the goods and services tax paid on new vehicle purchases, incentives on tradable scrap certificates and low interest rates/easy financing schemes on commercial vehicle purchases.

Once the Scrappage policy and the incentives are known, Tata Motors  is expected to finalise its Pricing strategy and  officially launch of BS VI CVs.
