Future car Alfa Romeo Guilietta/Guilia Sprint/Spider
Alfa Romeo was in desperate need for cash after the war. But they were also in great need of a vital mid-range saloon model. They came up with an innovative plan to fund the development of its new car: A lottery, with examples of the new saloon as the prize. But developments crawled on and on and there were no cars to give as a prize to the lucky winners.

The answer to this catastrophe was to commission a coupé that could be put into production quickly using a body built by Bertone. Hence the Guilietta Sprint was born.

The Sprint fused a very lithe and a well-balanced Bertone shape with a new 1.3 liter twin-cam engine, which was to become synonymous with the Alfa for decades.

An equally attractive car was the Guilietta Spider which came in 1955 and it provided Alfa Romeo another successful hit after the Guilietta Sprint. More aggressive cam profiles and upgraded engines with higher compression became available through the Sprint and the Spider Veloce.
