This Milanese firm was completely revolutionized due to Vittorio Jano's arrival. Vittorio laid out a new light, streamlined and a supercharged Grand Prix car- the P2. It was powered by a new 2.0-litre straight eight engine with twin overhead camshafts acting on inclined valves which fed hemispherical combustion chambers. This made the P2 extremely competitive.
This powerful engine was the base of the six cylimder, single cam motor for the new generation cars known as the 6C series. The first car of this series has no supercharger, and had only one carburettor, hence it was relatively underpowered. But by 1928 a quicker twin-cam 1500 Sport was available which was followed by a much quicker Super Sport.
However with the introduction of a larger 1750 engine in twin-cam and high compression guises, more performance followed. This car was known as the 1750 Gran Sport and it delivererd 85bhp abd a top in excess of 90 mph (144.8 kmph).
An eight-cylinder 8C series followed that was quite expensive, but by that time the Great Depression set in and Alfa Romeo had to depend on government money to keep it afloat.
